Derik and I leave in less than a week for Borneo! We’re so excited, it’s hard to concentrate on doing anything else. I have a feeling this next week will be littered with travel posts. Be prepared.
I’m pretty sure everything from this point forward (blog related) will also be as procrastinated as possible. Perfect example: this post was supposed to be posted YESTERDAY as part of ‘Friday Funnies’ but now it’s Saturday so….
I had an excuse though. I posted the most awesome giveaway ever from all my sponsors! Go check it out.
Ever wondered how everyone travels in Asia? If you’re really wanting to get immersed into the culture maybe following these guidelines will probably
not help you. Guys, you should know, this list is actually based on true events that I have witnessed myself. Disclaimer: not everyone travels like this, I am not stereotyping. All images found on google images.
1. Travel in humungo tour groups. There’s nothing worse than getting getting caught up in the middle of a tour group. Not only are they aggressive and pushy, but they scare me half to death with their matching hats, shirts, scarves…or whatever! Whenever I see that little leader flag in an airport or location I run in the other direction.
I’ve heard going on a tour is actually pretty cheap, and you’re running around constantly with a full itinerary. If you’re on a strict budget for traveling, this may be the way to do it.
2. Rent a tour bus.
Geoje is a huge tourist destination. I’m not sure why. I am still unclear as to what marketing strategies they use to get people here. Apparently the island’s location we lovingly call ‘Windy Hill’ (basically a small plot of land that has a windmill on it), was used in the filming of a movie or something. Maybe that’s it? Our Geoje is littered with tourists every weekend. As you’re driving along the road, you can see plenty of buses pulled off to the side of the road, and all the families, couples, and individuals are outside sitting cross-legged on the ground, eating their sack lunches.
3. Use a speaker phone to communicate with the rest of your party.
I have yet to get the point of using a megaphone while standing two feet away from someone. I have a hard time understanding what people say when they use a megaphone anyway. Actually, now that I think about it, I spend 80% of my class time telling my students to listen. Maybe a megaphone would actually get their attention?
4. Take as many selfies as possible.
Most people would be shocked at this photo; maybe even break down laughing. Not me. I have lived in Asia too long and know that most people spend a good majority of their time taking selfies. I’ve heard the reason why Koreans are so obsessed with taking them literally everywhere is that they’d rather send a photo of themselves in their location rather than text someone about it. Not sure if that’s true but…what else makes sense?
5. Buy an expensive DSLR with thousands of dollars worth of accessories, and use it as a point-and-shoot.
This girl looks like she knows what she’s doing. Also, that lens is about as big as she is. I’m dying to see what her side of the camera looks like. I realize this photo may be a bit of a stretch, but I have seen multiple people, walking around with HUGE cameras and treating them like a point and shoot. I’m talking using their flash at all times, shooting on auto, and basically just pointing and shooting. Most of them are taking pictures of their family. Why do you need a huge 300mm lens to take a photo of your family? Sigh. Status…all status.
