I STILL Don’t Use Shampoo

It’s official. I’ve been on the no poo method for a quarter of a year. For all of you who aren’t sure what the heck no-poo is, it has nothing to do with going to the toilet. It’s a term used when talking about not using any sort of shampoo on your hair. I know, now you’re thinking, “Wait. What? You haven’t used shampoo in THREE MONTHS?” Yes. It’s true. And my hair looks and feels amazing. The picture above was taken last week, so as you can see I’m not a dirty grease-ball.

So what is no-poo exactly? It’s eliminating shampoo and conditioner out of the picture entirely, and substituting baking soda and vinegar in it’s place. The baking soda acts as the cleaning agent in the hair washing process. You only use enough to cleanse your hair, so you don’t need to worry about it frying (seems to be the biggest hesitation when it comes to  the no-poo method). The vinegar acts as the conditioning agent, and can leave your hair feeling soft, shiny, and overall…CLEAN.

I’ve explained the reason why I no-poo in this post, but to break it down to you real quick it’s because shampoo strips your scalp of all natural oils once it’s used. Your scalp tries to make up for the oil loss and ends up overcompensating causing a greasy head within one to two days. The vicious cycle is repeated over…and over.. and over. You get the picture.

I’ve already told you, but I’m loving being shampoo free. My hair and scalp love it too. I’ve noticed crazy growth (we’re talking 2 1/2 inches in two months), stronger hair, less dead hairs, and thickness since I’ve started. My question is…why isn’t everyone doing this?

Ok, if you’re just hearing this for the first time I’ll give a brief explanation of what you do. There are two methods to the BS and V wash, and I’ve only tried one.
The first way is to premix the solutions.

Ingredients for No Poo

  • Baking Soda WashAdd one tablespoon of baking soda to one cup of water inside the squeeze bottle. Shake well. Use enough in the shower to fully saturate only the roots of your hair. A pre-made bottle of this solution will last me 4 washings (but it’s going to be different for every person.) I also have to use 2 tablespoons of bs in my solution instead of just one. Keep in your hair until it starts feeling ‘slippery.’ I’ve noticed this change after about 2 minutes. THOROUGHLY rinse out.
  • Vinegar Rinse: Add two tablespoons of vinegar to one cup of water inside a spray bottle. Shake well. Apply to length of hair (roots are not needed) paying special attention to your ends. Keep in for the remainder of your shower and rinse right before you get out. Some women keep it in as a leave-in conditioner (personally, I’m not sure about this one).

The second way is the paste method. This way worked better for my sister who had problems with a waxy feel to her hair, even after changing vinegars, using more baking soda etc. I have not personally tried this one.

  • Baking Soda Paste: Place an airtight container of baking soda in your shower. Each time you need to wash your hair place about a tablespoon of soda in the palm of your (wet) hand. The water on your hand will help form a paste. Get this paste on your fingertips and massage in the roots of your hair. If your hair is especially thick, add more baking soda. Just as in method number one, ONLY apply to the roots. Keep in until your hair starts to feel slippery and the baking soda has mostly dissolved.
  • Then condition with the Vinegar Rinse from method one.

OK. So we’ve got the basics down. Now for the fun part. After doing the no poo method for three months I can tell you what to expect when you first start. Your first washing (and maybe even second and third) is going to feel SUPER awesome. Your hair will be light and softer than it’s ever been. You’ll be experiencing your first bout of no poo love. And then the hard part sets in. Your hair will figure out that it’s going to be producing and maintaining it’s own oils. It’ll go a little crazy at first, and you may experience a bit of greasiness (there are solutions below to help combat them). Well, congratulations because you’re in the first stages of transition. Your hair is learning to maintain it’s oil, but produces too much still. This is why you’ll need to wash (at first) every 2-3 days. The key is to try to go for a longer and longer period of time before washings. I started out being able to go 2-3 days, now I can go 5-6. Mid-transition may be a bit crazy for some. My sister was experiencing a greasy scalp, but dry, frizzy ends. She equated it to feeling like a poodle. But then poof! It was as if a light bulb turned on with the follicles of her hair and she woke up to it feeling fantastic. Trust me, if you can stick through your transition period (for some people it’s a few days, for others a few weeks), you’ll be as good as good for the long haul!

After transition you’ll notice 3 life-changing major things.

  1. Your hair has less frizz and flyaways (this is GREAT for women who have curl)
  2.  Your hair will (hopefully) start growing like a weed. All the women I’ve talked to have experienced this along with myself.
  3. You will save a ton of time by only having to wash it 1-2 times a week!

Yeah guys, I’m not ever going back to shampoo that’s for sure. Here are some tips to help you with your first few weeks.

A small list of troubleshooting tips for No-Poo

Some helpful hints?
If you don’t like your hair smelling like nothing (strangely the baking soda and vinegar cancel each other out) and would rather have the sweet smell that shampoo gives you, buy some essential oils. My favorite are lavender, orange, and peppermint. Place a small amount in your palm, rub your hands together, and smooth over hair. (PLEASE do this after you heat treat your hair. Don’t want to risk frying your hair (oil + heat= frypan).

Have terrible knots and can’t comb your hair? Give coconut oil or jojoba oil a try! They’ve worked for me…and are fantastic for your hair!

A boar bristle brush is also a great way to keep your hair healthy. While doing no-poo, a bristle brush will help distribute the natural oils in your hair from the root to the very tips, leaving it shiny and smooth. I haven’t used one…not quite sure where I would find one in Korea. I’ve been told that the bristle brush is very gentle and does a great job not breaking or ripping your hair while you brush. If you want to give your hair an extra amount of TLC I’d give this a try!

For the days that your hair feels a little greasy but not enough to wash: give dry shampoo a try. I can’t believe how well cornstarch works for soaking up grease! I have blonde hair, and this method is the best dry shampoo I’ve ever found! Even while using shampoo on a daily basis! If you have dark hair though, I’d recommend using cocoa powder. The cornstarch will leave your hair looking grey…and we know you don’t want that!!! And who doesn’t want their hair to smell like chocolate all day?

As you may have figured out, I can’t speak enough of how great the no poo method has been for me. I also can’t believe how much money I’ve wasted throughout the years using shampoo!     Hi, i have read your post but i have a few qus.
    1. When you talk about using the no-poo solution, do you use it for 2-3 days and the reat of the week you just use water to wash your hair?
    2. If by any means, irritation occures when using the no-poo solution like itchiness or other irritation, which should i reduce and which should i increase. ( Sorry, i know you already state it in your post but i am still a bit confused).

    Help me out with the coconut oil. My hair is very dry and brittle, but it seems like no matter how little of the oil I use, it’s too much. Like seriously, i put a drop on my hands and try to smooth it over my ends and it’s too much.

    Hi pretty lady, nice page you have. I wish I can live in South Korea! I
    have been on half no-poo practice for 8 months now. It’s half-poo
    because while I use baking soda paste on my hair, I still use normal
    hair conditioner on the lower half of my hair (have to finish up the
    leftovers you know). Strangely, I didn’t have that awesome feeling like
    you have experienced. My hair is just as frizzy, I have to wash my hair
    everyday or else my scalp gets itchy / greasy. I used to only have to
    wash my hair every 2 days. Furthermore, I have eczema on my fingers and
    it hurts when I get the baking soda on my hands. Therefore, I am
    thinking of quitting and going back to poo. Any advice?

      The reason for this is because you’re not balancing the PH of your scalp after the baking soda. That is what the vinegar is for. You NEED to use the vinegar on the scalp/roots after a baking soda wash.

    I have been doing this for about 12 weeks and I work the dry baking soda through dry hair. This allows me to evenly distribute it. I avoid massaging it directly into my scalp as I find it too drying and even irritating if I don’t rinse throughly enough. I also use ACV for conditioner. So far so good. I repeat the process about every 3 days. I am not going to claim that my hair is so my more amazing compared to traditional shampoo/conditioner, but it is not worse either. Maybe it will be more noticeable as my chemical exposed hair grows out. However, baking soda and ACV is going to same some money and spare myself and the earlh exposure to some chemicals and packaging…so I will keep doing. (my husband has started to switch over too and has no complaints).

    I’ve heard about this for years, have a friend who did it about 5 years ago, but he is make and seemed easier for him, it is nice to see techniques people use to ease the transition. I had surgery this week so have been dirty not wanting to shower so now seems like the perfect time to Introduce the baking soda. Thanks!

    This article promises such a lot haha (as in the earth)…Expertly written to tap into women’s worries about their hair and to get energy for this questionable cause.
    *”hair will grow like a weed”
    *”it will be softer and shinier and possibly thicker than ever before”
    *”conventional and cheap house cleaning products are used so therefore it must be good” Ahem yes. House cleaning not hair cleaning products!
    * claims made about the efficacy of BS as a cleanser…which chemically is a cleaner, but not a detergent as such and so will not necessarily get the grease and dirt out of your hair. Plus it will have different and not always positive results depending on the person and water quality and is more likely to leave a deposit on your hair and yes, give you a flaky scalp more than anything else.
    I use three commercial shampoos in rotation and am a fan of Dr Organic products here in the UK. What you eat will also make a huge difference (90% of the time) so I recommend addressing any possible food allergies and eating healthily for you.
    The author of this article is obviously a PR blowhard who gets a thrill from the numbers of people they can recruit to the cause. It’s obviously very effective and great salesmanship, but utter drivel and in some cases I find it quite unsympathetic – it leaves people who have tried it and for whom it doesn’t work in a state of “what do I do now?”
    *”yes there are some issues with this method but it is worth the pain” Aarghh. In the time you spent messing around with BS and the like, you could have gone out and found yourself a shampoo which actually worked!!

    I have thick red wavey hair but it takes FOREVER to grow! I have stopped the shampoo now I just condition and it seems to be getting more defined waves and healthier so next step I’m trying the baking soda yay! We have pretty hard water so do you think that will affect the proses? Also I used to let coconut oil sit in my hair for an hour before I washed it but with just baking soda and vinigar do you think it would leave it to greasy? How long was it until you noticed significant growth? Oh and what vinegar would be better? Thanks for this blog it’s really interesting and informative have a great day :)

    HI! I just started the noo poo method due to really bad problems I have with my scalp. Im only on the second wash and I LOVE the results on my scalp. No flaking, no inflammation or bleeding. I am concerned about the length of my hair though; the hair by my roots feels so soft and silky but the rest of my hair feels waxy and stiff. I’ve mixed the baking soda with water which helped should I do the same for the apple cider vinegar? Or is it too soon and should I just wait a few more weeks?

      Um. You should DEFINITELY be mixing the baking soda with water!!! The ratios are above! I hope you got it all figured out. :) if your ends feel dry, keep the vinegar on longer. If they waxy, use less vinegar

    Hi, I’ve done the no poo wash twice now, I’d really like to experience this awesome hair magic! I’m just a little unsure about a few things. My hair feels almost dirty, like there is too much hairspray or some kind of residue on it. Am I doing it wrong?! I mean, it looks clean! But it feels so gross, and I’m wondering what your take is on that. Am I just not washing out all the baking soda? Or using too much? I swear I sat in the shower for a good ten minutes rincing it out… Help?!

    I’m a convert already, and I only started yesterday! My hair is extremely thin, and it gets so greasy looking by the next morning that I have to either wash it every day, or use dry shampoos every single day in between washes. I woke up on Day 2 to hair that has zero hint of grease whatsoever. Having no scent to my hair is a little odd, but absolutely worth it. Couldn’t possibly be more impressed.

    Hey I tried it for 3 days, and my hair felt so weird in a bad way, like it looked okay but felt gross, almost greasy and was very hard to brush through. It felt like I had paste in my hair, and I thoroughly rinsed everything out. Is there any suggestions as to help fix this?

    Love your blog aswell! I have now been using bs and acv for over three weeks. My hair is starting to be more presentable slowly though I do have some other problems. My hair appears thinner, limb and I loose loads of it every time I shower and brush. I have already halved the amount of bs per wash but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. Do you hve an idea what I could do to make it better?
    Over all my scalp feels better and I also have less dandruff than when using shampoo.

    When you say you don’t wash your hair for 5-6 days – do you mean that, No amount of water hits your hair at all? or do you do a water rinse but no wash? I am always confused at this when people say they don’t wash their hair for several days? This has been very helpful and I am highly considering the no-poo method myself.

      Yes, for the most part it means no water touches it at all. I know it sounds gross, but your scalp eventually (after a month or so of going through transition) figures out how to produce oils slowly. It literally takes your scalp 5-6 days to get even slightly greasy! Remember each person will be a little bit different. Also it depends on the weather. In the summer it was 5-6 days. Now in the winter it’s down to 3-4.

      If I have a week where I work out heavily and sweat, I have no problems rinsing my hair with water after my workout. It doesn’t damage anything, and then let it drip dry. :)

    Hi, I want to try out this method an was wondering, for the greasy transition phase, as I’ve already bought some batiste dry shampoo, would it be suitable to use that? Or should I avoid that and just go get some cocoa powder instead? Thanks :)

    Hi I am on day one and just washed my hair with BS and rinsed with ACV. My hair were tangled and heavy straw like even after drying them. I looked like carrying a nest over my head. I applied Levander oil by DOVE as I am from India. I could comb them normally and they were manageable. My question is how can I wash my oiled hair now if I am on no poo. Am confused pls help!!!

    I decided I was going to try the no poo method this week and this morning was my first attempt. I mixed a heaping TBS of BS with warm water in a 12 oz bottle last night. In another bottle, I mixed 1 TBSP of ACV plus a little? With warm water in another 12 oz bottle. I applied the BS mixture to scalp only, rubbed it in a bit and waited a minute or two, it never felt slippery? Then, I applied the ACV mixture and tried to isolate it to roots/ends, but my hair is shortish bob, so it ended up on my roots. I washed it out after maybe a minute. Anyway, everyone says day 1, your hair feels amazing and soft. Mine feels like I have some kind of pomade on my roots, my hair is not silky and trying to run my fingers through it, well, it feels a little waxy on top and a tab bit dry on the bottom. I’m worried I messed up along the way. I should add that my hair is super straight, fine, usually soft like a baby, but I do have highlights. What should I do? Tough it out? Modify my recipe or steps? Oh, I will add that my hair “looks” good. It is shiny, not greasy. Any help would be SOOO very appreciated because I want to see this to the end. I am dedicated to making this work! :). PS I added a tiny tiny bit of cold pressed coconut oil onto the little bits of the ends, just to make it feel better.

    I just started No Poo tonight and I’m already loving it! I think I made enough mix for about 3 washings instead of 4 but I’m loving the feel of my hair tonight! Hopefully my transition period won’t last too long and I’ll keep you updated haha

Thanks to you I don’t use shampoo for about month and a half now :-) I try to be patient and I can see my hair is much better but I still experience waxy hair back almost every day and it’s really annoying. Is it possible my transition is taking so long? I’m going on holiday in few weeks and I wonder how to protect my hair from the sun when I’m at the beach if I don’t want to use any chemical condition?     I am really interested in trying this method. I tried it last night as a trial, but I have a few questions. When I tried to research the use of baking soda and apple cider vinegar on hair, I got almost the same amount of negatives as positives. Is there any research to back up the process?

    I also usually use egg and olive oil masks on my hair about twice a month. Would it still be okay to do that or will it mess up the process?

    Last thing, I read your FAQ pages and I did see your answer to the question about working out, but what about really intense work outs? I come out of hot yoga looking like someone dumped a bucket of water over my head. And running in the Texas heat causes quite a bit of sweat as well. Would you still just rinse with water or go ahead and use the baking soda and ACV?

    Sorry for so many questions. I am just very anxious to fully get started with this.

    I’ve been using the no poo method for about a month now and until yesterday I did something I was NOT supposed to do; I put coconut oil in my hair as a mask and now it won’t come out. I tried the BS mixture on it once and it didn’t take it out. What should I do? I don’t want to start again, I’ve come so far and I want to stick to the no poo method. Should I increase the amount of baking soda in my usual mixture, and then condition it with the ACV mixture??

    You’ve inspired me to try again. I had tried the paste method before, but it was so messy. The baking soda kept getting wet. I’m going to try your method and see if I can make it work better. (Just a note vinegar is also a good bathroom cleanser. You can clean your shower while your in there :)

    hi, i love your blog! i am currently on week 4 of my no poo transition, and i can already see my hair decreasing in oil. but i have also seen bad and unusual things. firstly, my hair is naturally curly, but wont do so without curl booster, so my hair has been going limp and undefined. secondly once i get out of the shower, my hair drys up all crunchy like when you leave in the conditioner, but i have been making sure my hair is thoroughly rinsed before stepping out of the shower. thirdly, my hair basically feels gross, straw like and sticky after washing. i have tried decreasing and increasing both the acv and the bs but nothing seems to work. my hair feels quite slippery and the closest to soft it can after the bs, but once i have added even a few sprays of acv, its a starchy, unbrushable mess again! i haven’t been able to wear my hair out for 4 weeks?! is no poo just not for me?

      Instead of using ACV, use white vinegar! It takes a bit for your hair to understand what’s going on, and the longer you go without washings the better your curls are going to be. I have a friend who has super (I mean REALLY) curly hair and she doesn’t even need the baking soda. She’s one of the brave souls who went head first into no poo and only puts vinegar in her hair. Her curls have only gotten better and better!

        I’ve noticed (w s&c, unfortunatley) that I cannot use a hairbrush on it dry. It becomes too ‘poofy’ and frizzy.

    I found this post just this weekend and started with the treatment right away, since I already had everything I need in my kitchen! And, I might add, it completely washed out the camp fire smell from my hair after the weekend’s socializing, which my normal shampoo and conditioner couldn’t do. I was so amazed!!

    I read through your FAQ’s, but have a question you didn’t cover there – my hair felt so awesomely thick and wavy after the first wash, but when I rinsed it after the bs treatment (this morning, my second wash) it felt very heavy. It was really hard to thoroughly rinse both the bs and vinegar solution from my hair. Am I doing something wrong, or is this part of the transition period, or just normal? Also, my hair seems very dull now (I don’t colour my hair at all and don’t put any heat to it). Did I not rinse my hair well enough? It still feels wonderful, though.

    Hi. I started this no shampoo method 4 weeks ago, I use 1 tbsp baking soda mixed with 1 cup of diluted water and 2tbsp vinegar mixed with 1 cup of diluted water and only use this once a week. My hair isn’t as oily anymore but isn’t dry and gets really tangled and feels a bit damp on the roots. So, I was wondering if I can straighten my hair or use mouse or if I should stay away from that completely?

    Hi! Im interested to try out your methods on shampoo free! But im just curious about how my hair woud turn out later on. Honestly i was searching for a web on how to thicken my thinning hair. Its really this and its starting to stess me out. Fyi, my hair is about a 10 cents overall. Im pretty worried that i would go bald. To add, im only 21 and im doing good with mydiet and health just that im wasnt sure what cause my hair to start thinning. Ive tried coconut oil, some thickening products but none of em works for me.       Hello! I don’t want to seem pushy but you may want to consult a Doctor about your hair loss to see if a birth control or hormonal treatment will help. I have a friend who is 22 and has gone through the same hair loss trouble. She has found tremendous help with birth control and finally regulating her hormones. It is always different for everyone, but if this hair loss is recent, it might be worth a shot! Hope you find help with the No Poo treatment!

    I put about 20 drops of peppermint oil into my vinegar rinse bottle (8 oz bottle). Cancels out the vinegar smell and since it is so diluted with the water, I don’t have any problems with using heat appliances (and my hair smells like peppermint until I wash it again, a few days later). My hair is naturally curly but straightens easily–there are times when I have an extra 8-oz bottle that is filled with JUST water and the 20 drops of peppermint oil and I will spritz it on my hair to rejuvenate my curls. Love peppermint oil!

    No poo won’t work for many because of hard water. I never got over the transition period doing no poo the traditional way. However if you boil your water first (about four cups), take the water off the burner, then add the bs (about 1/2 cup) it will work like a charm. The water will feel slippery. Add to bottles once cooled and you’re ready to go!

      I do both. If I work out hard core and I sweat real bad I’ll rinse my hair. If I don’t? There’s no need to rinse the hair! I usually put it up in a high bun when I take my shower each day.

    Hey, Amanda! So I went no poo about three weeks ago after I read this post, and it’s pretty awesome so far! My transition period is going just swimmingly because I tried to wash my hair as little as possible before I switched to the no poo method. My only concern is about flakiness and dandruff… I previously used Head and Shoulders to deal with mild dandruff caused by hard water, and I know you said the baking soda releases so much buildup from over the years (and trying to tame naturally wavy and frizzy hair, I have used a lot of product in the past). But I’m just concerned that this flakiness isn’t going to stop! It’s pretty noticeable… I was just wondering if you could give me any tips or experiences from other people dealing with this? Thank you in advance, and thank you for writing such an in-depth and thorough post on no poo!

    I started the no-poo on Saturday because my hair is like yours, fine and a lot of it that gets greasy in less than 24 hours. I am wondering if on the days that you are not washing your hair with the BS solution are you just rinsing it with water in the shower or doing nothing to it at all? Also, I have noticed right off the bat that I have this waxy feeling to my hair – will that get better once transitioned or do I need to adjust what I am doing?

      What vinegar are you using? Apple cider or white? That can make a difference with the waxy feeling! Also I do both. On the days I exercise and sweat a lot, I’ll get my hair wet. On the days that I do absolutely nothing I’ll keep it up in a high bun and dry while taking a shower! :)

    I really like this idea! I have been doing basically the same with my face since forever – only using water to wash my face with a basic light face cream with 15spf afterwards. I never have problems with pimples/spots etc and I often get compliments on my skin.
    I already only shampoo wash my hair once every 4 days and since the shampoo I am currently using has gone off the market I need to change. I absolutely dread finding a new shampoo, it is such a hassle and my hair then has to go through a transition or the shampoo doesn’t really work and I have to try a new one and, and, and… So since my hair is going to go through a transition phase in any case I think I’ll much rather go for the no-poo option. Then I’ll never have to go through a transition again, yeah!

      Wow awesome! I’m really curious to try something like that for my face. I think it’ll take a while to get used to it. Do you wear much makeup? I’ve heard of an oil face wash using olive oil and a few other things. I’d like to try it!

        I use a mixture of coconut oil and tea tree oil to wash my face about 3 times a week, especially if i have a small breakout (usually due to hormones). I used to have a horrible time with acne and this method has cleated it up better than anything out there- and i had tried everything. I dont even need to wear foundation anymore. Just a light mineral powder. The oil also is great as a makeup remover. Days i don’t wash with oil i just use plain water. My skin is so soft and i never need moisturizer.

        First i smear the oil on my face and massage it in really well. Second i take a washcloth with water as hot as i can stand it and rinse rinse rinse while exfoliating (i have been using baby washcloths for this and compared to terricloth it works a lot better), and thats it. I usually do it in the shower. And i dab tea tree on pimples before bed and they are usually dried out and almost gone by morning.

        I told my mom about this, because she had been battling some sort of eczema or what she guesses might be shingles, on her forehead for 2 years. After just a week it totally cleared it up.

        The success ive had at my face care has me looking for a new way to shampoo, which brought me here. Im looking forward to phase out. Im almost out of shampoo and have been washing less and using my boar hair brush in between washings. I think im just going to fill my old poo bittle with vinegar and baking soda lol.

          I’m one of those people whose pores can’t cleanse themselves for some reason, and can neither consume any sort of oil nor put it on my skin; I do need the commercial products as the new generation oil free ones do actually work. This in addition to consuming neither sweet foods nor milk or other vegetable allergens.
          Wrt to this no shampoo method, I think this is a very cleverly written article which taps into women’s fears (about their hair). Obviously one size is not going to fit all and it sounds from the rather concerning reactions which some people are having that the products are much too harsh for their hair and scalp and they may well have an allergy. I’m not saying all commercial products are brilliant but I still wouldn’t touch this method with a bargepole. I have three different commercial shampoos and use them in rotation. Frankly what you eat is as important as what you put on your hair/ skin and I find I can only drink bottled water as our city’s tap water is notoriously bad.
          Seriously though I think this article is a bit of a joke. As in BS stands for Bullsh*t and ACV stands for All Cobblers with a V sign at the end LOL !!!!!

        Just started the no-poo. Was using WEN for ten years (very expensive) and found I still had to cleans every day as I perspire a lot and my hair smelled like dirty hair the next day. I have done the no-poo twice and JUST LOVE THE WAY MY HAIR LOOKS AND FEELS. I have curly long white hair that was frizzy and turning yellow. Now I went three days with only rinsing my hair and it is awesome with NO SMELL. I am using a 50/50 on the white/apple cider vinegar as am concerned the apple cider may yellow my hair. After my hair is dry I use a few drops of coconut oil mixed with essential oil (patchouli) and lightly smooth my beautiful curls.

        If you want an awesome facial cleanser use coconut oil. I put some in my hand, let it melt then add a little water and cleans my face and neck like I would with soap. Then use one side of a microfibre wash cloth to remove the excess coconut oil. The small amount of residue from the coconut oil moistens and soothes the skin. If you use make up do it twice. First to remove makeup and then with a fresh cloth or the other side of your microfibre cloth to cleanse. I keep these microfibre cloths just for my face and at the end of the week wash them in really hot water with small amount of grease cutting dish soap to remove the makeup and coconut oil.

    Hey there, so I am finally asking for help because it seems like I must have missed an important step in the process. I have been doing this for two weeks now and though my hair is feeling healthier when dry, it’s utterly disgusting when wet. I followed the instructions to a “t” but never felt the BS become slippery in my hair so after waiting four minutes I proceeded accordingly. I wasn’t, nor have I been, able to massage the BS into my scalp because my wet hair is so unbearably tangled and coarse with the BS solution in it. I have tried more BS, less BS, waiting two minutes, five minutes, or no minutes at all but cannot move my fingers around freely in my wet hair and have not once felt it get slippery. I have even tried the paste which I was wary of because I saw one user write that it could be harmful to hair. My hair is very fine and dry it is great, but it’s such a gross, un-hygenic feeling when wet I want to cease the program. I have yet to feel those amazing days you spoke of which should occur within the first few days and more importantly, I need to be able to care for my hair when it’s wet instead of waiting for it to dry naturally to untangle it.

      Hmmmmm. I would suggest brushing it out before you get your hair wet. Yes, it does feel different in the shower when it’s wet than when you used shampoo. No more suds! I’m surprised you have yet to feel the slippery feeling. Are you just putting the BS only on your scalp? Even when my hair is tangly I’m still able to massage the BS on my scalp! You don’t have to do the rest of your hair. After four minutes you should have definitely felt the slippery feeling.

      Another thing I can mention is that the really tangly feeling didn’t go away until my hair had properly equalized and my natural oils had been disbursed throughout the entirety of my hair. Now I can take a shower and as soon as my hair gets wet it feels soft…in the shower!

      Absolutely no problem girl! :) Just ask for a sulfate and silicone free shampoo. Most salons carry at least one or two natural products due to client allergies and other things. You can call ahead and make sure. :)

    I have thick, curly hair that I recently colored. I try to wash it every other day, but recently I have been really worried about keeping my hair moisturized (I’m trying to grow it out too!). How would the transition period be if I used the BS for shampoo, but conditioned with store-bought conditioner? I just worry that with my hair going through so much change at one time, it will become straw-like. Thoughts? Def can’t wait to try this!!

      I have a friend that has crazy curly hair. I’m talking super tight little curls. She LOVES no poo and has been doing it for about three months now. Just make sure you’re using the vinegar for the conditioner. If you have problems just let me know exactly what’s going in and I’ll email her. :) She already told me she’d love to answer questions for curly haired girls such as yourself!

      It won’t strip your hair. If you have to use shampoo specifically for colored hair to keep the dye in longer you may notice a difference switching to no-poo. If not? You probably won’t even notice. No-poo does help your hair grow faster, so the dye job may not last as long root-wise. I have yet to hear of a girl who complains of that though. :)

    Hi there!! what an amazing adventure you guys are on! how cool! Anyways, I tried the no poo method about a year ago and didnt have good results. I have blonde highlights and after a few days of trying this the blonde became dull in color and my hair felt like there was a lot of residue in it. My family all noticed and asked what was wrong with my hair. lol. maybe I didnt try it long enough or was doing it wrong. You have blonde highlights correct? Did you experience that dull look at all? Just wondering if this works for bleached hair. Thank you!! :)

      It’s most likely you were starting your transition period! It happens to all of us. I would try to make sure you’re leaving in your baking soda until it feels a little bit slippery and then add your vinegar. Are you using ACV or white vinegar? I use lemon vinegar on my hair (the only thing I could find in Korea) and it works just fine. I went about 2 weeks where my hair didn’t have any shine. But that was just my transition. :)

      OH of course! You can use dry shampoo anytime! Cornstarch was my friend during my transition period. I love that stuff! The purpose of the dry shampoo is to help you last longer between washings…this helps balance out your greasiness.

      Yay! I’m excited for you! The best way I’ve found in putting dry shampoo in (cornstarch and cocoa powder) is to use a big blush brush and dab it in. It works wonders!

    I have been looking off and on for no-poo methods and have tried a few. I normally only shampoo my hair 3 times a week, and tonight I started my journey with this method. I have very thick, curly hair, and when I rinsed out the ACV, my hair wasn’t soft at all- it felt dry. I don’t know if I used too much of the baking soda or what, but my hair needs loads of moisture. Any ideas?

      YES! Use less BS. I know of girls with curly hair that only use bs once a week or less. Some of them just use only vinegar. You can also do a conditioning treatment with coconut oil. I’ve heard of girls that massage it into their hair before the shower and rinse it before they do the wash with bs and vinegar. OR you could put it in your hair after the shower. Either way works. Coconut oil is awesome!

    I was wondering if its possible to go straight into the transition period? I started ‘no poo’ last night and in less than 24 hours my hair has already become oily and with shampoo and conditioner it usually takes my hair about 3 days to get greasy. I try to wash my hair as little as possible, usually every other day but over the weekend if I don’t have a reason to fix my hair I will was my hair Friday morning and not wash it again until Sunday night. Also, I am in the Navy so my hair gets pulled back daily and goes weeks without seeing a dryer or straightener. Considering all that, I like to think my hair is fairly healthy, definitely the healthiest its been in years. I just thought I would get your opinion. Thanks!

If that doesnt work switch to white vinegar instead of apple cider. :) Let me know how it’s going! Your transition period should happen pretty soon after starting no poo.     i love that you’re no-‘poo! i’m coming up on my year no-poo anni haha. i wouldn’t do anything else! just one thing- the baking soda paste will DESTROY your hair over time. absolutely destroy it. the ph of baking soda is too different and it’s too harsh to be used as paste. it can lead to breakage over time and ain’t nobody got time fo dat. lol

She’s had a ton of success and has amazing hair with that method? I’m wondering if the breakage has to do with the thickness of hair, if you heat treat, how often you wash, and how thoroughly you rinse and condition with vinegar?     I have few questions and I thought I would ask you specifically because I am living in South Korea as well and some of them are specific to this country…
    First of all, I have been doing this for about two weeks now. I am not experiencing greasy looking hair, surprisingly, but I have noticed my hair feels different. It never had that ‘soft’ feeling that you described. Instead it feels really thick and almost ‘sticky’ (that is the best way I can explain it). Maybe like if you were to put too much chi straightening serum in your hair…that is about how it feels all the time. It makes it difficult to run my fingers through it. I am wondering if that is because I am using just apple vinegar and not apple cider vinegar. I haven’t had any luck finding apple cider vinegar in Korea…what do you use? Any advice on how to fix this problem?

    I also am experiencing my ends looking a little dry, which is something I have never really battled with. I don’t want to give up at all on the ‘no poo’ method, but it almost seems like it is damaging my hair more…

    Any advice?

    Oh and in case this helps with giving advice on my situation, I am using ‘cooking soda’ instead of baking soda. It’s all I could find at Homeplus, but I am assuming that is the same? lol

      Hey Arin! I use cooking soda as well! :) Same thing. What type of vinegar are you using? I had problems finding an ACV too, so I went with the lemon vinegar. I like the smell, and have never had a problem! Your sticky problem could be the type of vinegar you are using. Also, it sounds like you may need to keep your baking soda in longer (or add more to your solution). Make sure you keep it on the roots of your hair until it gets ‘slippery,’ then rinse it out. Spray in the vinegar solution and let it sit for 5 minutes or so and then thoroughly rinse that out as well.
      Use coconut oil or a small dab of extra virgin olive oil on your ends. (you can order coconut oil on iherb.com …as well as an abundance of other things for 4 dollar shipping to Korea!)

        I am using just plain apple vinegar. It’s the closest thing I could find. I currently have two tablespoons of baking soda with one cup of water in my solution. I will try to keep it on longer and see if that helps. I will also try to order some coconut oil today! I haven’t tried that, but I have been putting a little biosilk in every now and then :)

      It most definitely will! Baking soda does a WONDERFUL job releasing potentially years of build up on your scalp as well (gross I know.) I wouldn’t be surprised if you experienced a few ‘flaky’ days at first. It’s just the baking soda loosening up that buildup. :) Also another thing you’ll notice is that after the transition period you will only have to use about 1/3 of the product that you used before. This is because your hair is actually clean and it will take the product better!

I’m trying to surround myself with just natural, wholesome and pure foods, and personal hygiene seems a natural progression in eliminating artificial awfulness from my life, so I am interested in trying this, but I am confused by the dry shampooing suggestions made. How do you do it? When do you do it? Do you leave it in or shake it out (?) or what? My hair is no longer blond but not quite brown either (yes, I’m refraining from calling it dishwater brown or mousey…), certainly not as dark as cocoa powder would be. What would I use then? Thank you!

      Great question Kirsten! I actually haven’t answered a comment about dry shampooing, so you don’t have to worry about being redundant! Thanks for asking! The purpose of the dry shampoo is to soak up any grease you may feel during wash days (especially during the transition phase). I can’t even believe how great cornstarch works! There are a few different ways people put it in their hair. Some use a foundation powder brush and flick it into their hair…others use a small round container that has either had tiny holes cut in it, or one that came with them. I’m thinking like some sort of spice container may work? I haven’t tried that way myself. I have only needed to use dry shampoo when I was in transition, or if I hit day 5-6 and don’t want to wash my hair. :) As far as the color goes, try both. See what works better for you! The thing about going natural is that you’re going to need to experiment with things, and understand how your body reacts to them. I love it! Its such a great learning process.

      I’m not really understanding exactly what you are asking. First of all, I’ve heard no poo does wonders for super curly hair. Having more of a beach wave to my hair than an actual curl I am no expert in that area! You might as well give it a try and see if it works! :) AS far as moisturizing…coconut oil does wonders. :) I’ve also heard of people putting olive oil in their hair.

I saw on pinterest the “no-poo” remedy from your blog and my first reaction was “eeeww, no washing for 3 months?!” lol but then I read on and you convinced me to try it…I did my second “no-poo” cleanse last night and my hair is already starting to feel oily and the ends dry..almost straw like. So I think next cleanse ill do less baking soda and more ACV. But maybe i’m thinking already going through the “transition”?

    Also, I have a couple questions:

    1) what if Im at the beach for a week….you know going in the ocean with salt water, need to wash your hair afterwards, well is it okay to “no-poo” my hair everyday during that week or after my hair adjusts I could just rinse with water and be fine? what do you do on your adventures after being in the water?

    2) im scared to put jojoba or coconut oil in my hair…you kinda scared me when you said : (heat+oil=frying pan) haha I dont blow dry my hair, usually wash at night and let air dry while I sleep…so if I rub a considerable small amt of either in my hair at night, would it be okay to curl, flatten, or crimp it the next day?

      Thanks for your updates! You can start transition early. It’s basically your scalp trying to figure out how much oil to produce. :) Your measurements sound about right! I’ll try to answer your questions as best as I can.

      1. Although I currently live near an ocean, I have YET to get in the water. Salt is VERY drying…and I would highly recommend rinsing it out. I was actually thinking your exact question yesterday. I will be vacationing to Hawaii soon, and I was wondering how that would all work out. I think what I will try is rinsing and then conditioning with vinegar, skipping the bs until I think I need it. Please let me know what you end up doing!

      2. Haha, I’m sorry I got you so scared! The problem is most people think they can put something in their hair and it will protect it from all heat. It doesn’t. Especially high heat. You’re going to be TOTALLY fine, especially since you don’t blow dry your hair! That’s wonderful…I wish I could get away from the ol’ dryer myself. As far as your heating tools, you’re not going to need to turn them up to as high of a setting. Your hair will have less product buildup in it, and will be more sensitive to styling. That being said, the transition period is a whole different ball game. I spent two weeks with lifeless, flat, stringy curls. No matter how many times I ‘tried’ to curl my hair, even with a curling iron, it would hold for about 2 minutes. Not cool.

      I hope your transition goes by fast and as hassle free as possible!

        I think Im going to try a low-poo in between – hoping it will help with the transition?! I viewed the link you provided someone about 7 days ago to a fb page. I read the comments after comments and questions….someone listed an Organic Shea Butter Shampoo (considered loo-poo so not necessarily going back to the commercial/chemical products) — it actually describes detoxifying your hair follicles of build up and etc.. at the same time moisturizes dry damaged hair. Also read, ppl using aloe and honey in b/t no-pooing..

        Have you tried anything like that or strictly just BS & ACV and/or WO in your hair?

          I haven’t found it necessary to try anything else. That and honey is about 20 dollars for a stinkin jar here. I just do BS, DWV, and WO on the days my hair doesn’t need a full cleaning.

    I applied hair with coconut oil reconditioned healthy hair growth. I just used no poo an hour ago for the first time, so I am not exactly used to it yet. I was wondering how I could incorporate coconut oil with the no poo. It seem like putting it all together would make your hair healthier,stronger, and longer. How could I go about this?
    1) put coconut oil in my hair for an hour, then rinse it out. Finish with no poo baking soda water and vinegar as usual.
    . . OR
    2) take a shower using no poo style of washing hair, and lightly towel dry hair. With hair still damp, put a small amount of coconut oil in Palm and massage through out hair.

    I have a lot of hair, while individual strand is medium to thin thickness. I’m blonde, too. Do you think one of the methods I thought up are good, or would you do it differently?

      I’ve actually heard of both! If you’re wanting a deep conditioning treatment I’d go with the first. If you’re wanting something for every day use go with the second. Please don’t be afraid to give both a try! What may work for my hair may not work for yours. :) Good luck with your no poo process!

    SO excited to try this out. I only shampoo 2-3 times per week now. I just pull my hair back to hide the grease on the 3rd or 4th day. Hopefully this will make for a fairly easy transition period! :) thanks for the info!

    I use alot of products after I shower to prevent breakage and damage from blow drying and strengthening everyday. What do you do to prevent heat damage?

      Hey Girl! Thanks for stopping by. My recommendation would be to use less heat products. With no poo you wont have to blow dry (or fully straighten) your hair every day. Even with the best products doing heat treatment every day will majorly wear on your hair. So I’d try to cut back as much as possible on that. You can use coconut oil to help with heat treatment, just try not to use scorching heat. High heat can use that oil and basically ‘bbq’ your hair. yuck!

    I am so glad I found this post… I HATE what shampoo does to my hair! I started no-pooing over Memorial Day weekend (so no one at work would have to witness the transition phase!) and so far it’s awesome! It’s a bit hard to get used to–my hair is fine but thick, so with it being so clean, it doesn’t style the way I’m used to. There’s just not as much texture to it. Any suggestions?

      Anne, I feel your pain! I believe you’re going through your transition phase! I had a few weeks where my hair wouldn’t do anything. It was more like a silky limp rag. Which is awful because I have a slight curl to my hair! I couldn’t even curl it with an iron. I’d just say stick with it! Do you usually use product on your hair? Are you still using product? I can’t live without my mousse and hairspray. :) I didn’t sacrifice that!

        That’s exactly what I’m going through! I can’t curl or tease it at all. Hopefully this phase won’t last too long! I used mousse and hairspray occasionally before, but never had to daily. I’ve been using hairspray recently, but I haven’t used mousse since starting the baking soda/vinegar. I’ll definitely try it tomorrow! Thanks!

      Megan, I’ve been looking around for an answer for you. I have found that if you have dark red hair apply cinnamon to the cocoa powder for a more ‘reddish’ hue. If you have light red hair use the cornstarch with cinnamon.

    I’ve been wanting to try this method for a while, but I was wondering: what if you exercise daily? do you still not wash your hair? do you rinse it? this is the only thing that’s held me back from trying no poo!

      I exercise daily. :) I started with ‘No-poo’ while I was doing my third round of the Insanity workout, and now I’ve moved on to Jillian Michaels. I work out pretty darn close to every day. During Insanity I would sweat a lot more. I would rinse my hair off with water only every day, and then every 3rd to 4th day I would do the baking soda solution. Now, with Ripped in 30 I don’t sweat as much. It’s not as long or as intense…and I can squeak by without a sweaty head! I just put my hair up in a high bun while I shower after working out to keep my hair dry. I hope that helps! :)

      Also, would you recommend Extra virgin coconut oil? Or is regular ok? I ask because I’ve seen a few things while researching about using coconut oil and I usually always see that they say to use the EV oil. Thanks so much!! Also, (sorry) one more thing: I’ve been struggling for a couple years to get my hair to grow. It hardy grows, I don’t use any hair products and I only blow dry or curl/straighten it once every couple months and I don’t dye it!! I hope that this will aid in getting my long hair back!         Hmmm honestly I don’t know. Probably the more natural you can get it the better. I just order mine off of iherb.com. Speaking of which I need more! I use that stuff for everything! I COMPLETELY understand the stunted hair growth. My hair hasn’t been cut (it’s been trimmed) since August of 2010. Why isn’t it longer?!?!? But, have hope. In the last three weeks my hair has grown half an inch! That means…if it keeps up this pace, in a year it will have grown six inches. Geez.

      You’d put it in after your shower. :) Just on the ends first. If you roots appear dry then it’s because you’re using too much BS or using it too frequently.

    I’m getting ready to start the “no-poo” process, but I color treat my hair (usually at a salon) do you have tips on ways to rinse out the color without them using shampoo? Should I bring my mix with me?

      Girl, I do too. :) The stylist will need to use shampoo to get those harsh chemicals out of your hair. The baking soda will not e strong enough…and without shampoo you could end up with chemical burns! Just ask for sulfate-free shampoo and you’ll be fine. After that initial washing you’ll be ok with going back to the baking soda and vinegar. I’ve always loved your hair!

    Tried it… my hair came out extremely tangly and dry. I have super thick, long blonde hair that typically is soft and nice but I decided to give this a try, any tips?

      Yikes! That’s discouraging! I know mine, being wavy, took forever to get the tangles out the first time. I’d try about half the baking soda and make sure you are using apple cider vinegar. Make sure you keep the baking soda in until it feels a little slippery, and then rinse it out thoroughly before adding a generous amount of vinegar to the length of your hair. You can also try coconut oil to help with the tangles! Be sure that when your hair is wet you are using a wide toothed comb to comb it out instead of a brush. A brush can break your hair!

    I know getting your hair highlighted and dyed can dry it out. Will the vinegar provide enough moisture to balance the highlights or will I then have SUPER dry hair?

      I lighten my hair and tone it every three months or so. I just did this about a month ago, and my hair really wasn’t affected. If you have problems with dry hair try more vinegar (acv) and coconut oil. I was fine, but each person has different experiences.

          You can do both. :) Whatever you are most comfortable using. Now make sure that if you are home you use shampoo to rinse out the dye! Baking soda is not strong enough. If you go to the salon ask for a sulfate/silicone free shampoo. Mose salons have it and will respect the reason why you’d like it.

    I always see this stuff but am soooo hesitant to try. Something that makes me wonder is that no washing for 5-6 days. Do you not get your hair wet when you shower? Or, do you find a need not to have to shower at all?

      Ew gross! Of course I shower. That’s just discussing. Sometimes I put my hair way up in a tight tip knot if I don’t want to get it wet. If I’ve been sweating after a workout ill rinse my hair out with water only. I still take a shower daily. Lol I just don’t wash my hair daily. Only every 5-6 days. ;)

    Oh my gosh. I’ve NEVER heard of this! I’ve used baking soda and vinegar to get the “musty closet” smell out of our towels. No matter how often I wash them and dry them, sometimes the smell doesn’t come out. Same thing. Wash with baking soda; “soften” with vinegar (I’ve used white distilled vinegar). Expect a blog post on mine pretty soon. And my husband will probably think I am verifiably and absolutely nuts. LOL!

      Ask for sulfate-free shampoo. If you are needing to use shampoo once after getting a hair treatment it’s not going to screw up your progress too much. I just had to use shampoo last week, and after it’s use my hair felt SUPER dry and stripped (yuck, I hate experiencing what shampoo does to my hair!). I moisturized it with vinegar when I got home, and I’ve been fine ever since. It’s Thursday and I just washed my hair for the first time since Saturday.

        Agreed. Ask for sulflate free shampoo. Also make sure your stylist doesnt put a hair brush in your hair until your hair is 70% dry due to breakage. I am a stylist and i worked in a salon where coworkers would do that and I’d cringe.

    I really want to try this! I think it would be so convenient for when I go to Italy this summer during study abroad. I’m also thinking of doing the 30×30 challenge.       That would be a great idea! Just remember different climates wield different results. So if you start it back home and learn the exact amounts of bs and v you need…that may change in Italy.

      My husband just uses ACV to wash his dandruffy hair. You can’t smell it when it dries, which is perfect. Maybe if you can’t convince him to do the whole thing, he’ll be willing to try that! Plus it’s so much cheaper.

    Do you know anyone who does this that has curly hair? I have really curly hair and it took me years to figure out what products to put in it and how to dry it that make it look the best. I’m definitely into trying this, but I’m definitely worried about how my curls will look…

      I actually have beachy curly hair. Not super tight curls… But I did have a regimen to keep my hair under control. I still use a diffuser and mousse on the days I wash it when I want to wear it natural. Feel free to join the Facebook group and ask this question on there!
